| The
grand vision of making the National Sports Complex the centre
of excellence for sports actitivies in the nation began in 1972.
The Goverment had formed the National Sports Council followed
by a proposal by the then Prime Minister YAB Tun Abdul Razak
in 1973 that the government should build a national sports complex.

| The
proposal for the constrution of the National Sports Complex
was completed after Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad became Prime Minister.
From 1984 to 1989, initial works consisting of site clearing,
earthworks, roads and infrastructure and other amenities commenced
and when the country submitted its proposal to host the 16th
Commonwealth Games, preparations in the form of infrastructure

| This
convinced the Commonwealth Games Federation of Malaysia's ability
to hold this world-classes sporting event. The rest was all
history in the making. With construction completed in 1997,
the National Sports Complex played a major role of being the
main venue for most of the sports events featured in the highly
